Packing for Travel?

Summer means vacations and travel. Time away from work and stress—a relaxing change of scene. But how can you pack so that IT isn’t an unneeded cause of stress? Following are a few things to consider.

Length of Stay & Climate

A lot depends on the length of your stay and the climate where you’re going. Will it be a weekend, a week, or more? Will it be hot or cool?

If you’ll have a washer/dryer, you can pack less. If not, pack interchangeable items so your outfit always looks like a new one. Lightweight clothes are easy to pack and take up less space; wrinkle-free clothing always makes sense.

Hot weather means shorts, capris, sleeveless tops/dresses, and bathing suits. Cooler weather will require a sweater or jacket. A packable rain jacket/poncho is a good idea.

Planned Activities

What activities are planned? Low energy ones like relaxing by the shore, dining out, or shopping? Higher activity like hiking, bicycling, or ziplining? Extended sitting or walking?

Maybe pack a pretty top/dress for dining out. Comfortable and/or stretchy clothes for high activity.

City, Lake, or Beach?

Keep in mind appropriate attire. Flip-flops aren’t appropriate for a city walk or museum. Many hotels/resorts require swimsuit coverups to/from hotel, pool, beach.

Shoes, Purse & Scarf

Bring comfortable walking shoes. Wherever you go, there will be some walking—airport, city, or shopping.

Take a tote (for beach/shopping/plane) and small purse/clutch for day and night. An adjustable purse used as a clutch or crossbody bag is good. Neutral colors go with any shoes or clothes.

A scarf is always good for cooling, warming, or stretching a wardrobe.

Try to match everything—you’ll look great and can pack fewer items.

Toiletries

Pack necessary toiletries. Most hotels provide soap, shampoo, conditioner, even lotion, but you may want to bring your own. Also deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, and SUNSCREEN for any outdoor activities.

Jewelry

Keep it simple—no expensive pieces. Pack fewer pieces with necklaces and earrings that go with everything (silver, gold, black, white) or that match outfits you’ll be wearing.

Nightwear

Pack something comfortable and light for sleeping and a light robe for cool nights or air-conditioning.
